Let's Stay Together......
_ These days divorce seems as common as marriage. Although most last longer than that of Kim Kardashian and Cris Humphries, couples are still splitting up at an alarming rate. According to the United States Census Bureau 2,077,000 people were married in 2009. If we continue to follow previous trends it is estimated that 49% of those will end in divorce. If I felt like going to law school, becoming a divorce attorney seems like it would be a profitable career.
Unlike so many others, I still believe in love. I believe in finding your soul mate and carving out a life together and I believe in true love. I don’t think I’m alone. We need more examples of everlasting love. Successful couples need to mentor young couples. I think too many couples enter into marriage with unrealistic marital expectations. But the public still loves a great love story. Remember late last year when the public was up in arms after tabloids started reporting that Will and Jada Smith were breaking up. Everyone was yelling "Say it ain't so!!!" and luckily it wasn't. Men and women alike, want to believe that happily ever after exists. We wanted the world to see that a young, black, successful, progressive couple could hold it together. However, instead of looking at celebrities we really know nothing about, maybe we should start looking a little closer to home.
Personally, I don’t have to look any farther than my own family. Both sets of my grandparents were together over 50 years. I have aunts and uncles who have been together over 30 years. And even though some of them make it look easy, they’ll tell you in a heartbeat, it’s not. A successful marriage takes work, dedication and compromise. So in honor of the upcoming Valentine’s Day, I’m dedicating this month’s IGW to marriage, and I’m resurrecting an oldie but goody interview I did with my former employers Howard and Beverly Robertson. I interviewed them separately about what it takes to have a successful marriage. Let’s put fantasy aside for a while and subject ourselves to a hard dose of reality. Who you marry is one of the most important decisions you'll ever make. Living with someone for the rest of your life isn’t easy, but if it’s done right it can be enjoyable.

Other Features
It has recently come to light the Olympic track star Lolo Jones is still a virgin, and she is waiting until marriage to have sex. It was also a recent hot topic that actress Meagan Good is celibate and will continue to be so until she and her fiance get married later this year. Not too long ago I featured a young Memphis native who is still a virgin and is encouraging other young people to wait with her organization, The V Movement. I also introduced you to a young man who decided early on in his life to wait until he was married to have sex and is now enjoying a wonderful marriage and his first child. I think it's important that we inform those who have chosen this path that they are not alone. It's not easy but happy endings do exist. Let's revisit them, shall we?
